Rush 2015: Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc.

Almost four-years-ago when I started school at Baylor University, I knew I would have a difficult time adjusting to being away from my family. I am a quiet, shy and introvert girl, who did not want my college experience to be taken over by alcohol, parties and intense amounts of dram. But during the first few semesters of my college career I would see sisters from Delta Kappa Delta Sorority Inc., a South Asian sorority/service organization, together on campus and think to myself, “I wonder what it’s like to be on the other side.”

Baylor is a predominantly Caucasian school, and I felt the need to surround myself with people who could understand my cultural point of view. At the time, I had very little knowledge about what a sorority was, what it took to become a sister or what were the reasons for people to join.

So, I took my time with my decision and after several semesters of thinking about whether or not joining a sorority was for me, I finally decided to take the plunge during my junior year and rush DKD.

I crossed Nov. 8, 2013 with four beautiful girls I am proud to call my line sisters. We became incredibly close during our process and remain that way until today. Becoming a part of “the other side” was nothing short of incredible; being called a sister was amazing. I did not realize how much I wanted this until after I crossed.

One of the best parts, I find, of this organization is that it is simultaneously a service organization and a social sorority. As sisters, we focus our attention on Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention, and before I formally joined DKD, I already had a passion for service.

After crossing into the Zeta Chapter of DKD, I had the chance to share my passion for service, create bonds linked to culture or sometimes religion, and be a part of a thriving sisterhood. My sisters would eventually become my family away from home.

I may still be quiet and shy, but I can confidently say that DKD and the beautiful girls in it have taught me to be a better person. I have become someone who works harder, who opens up more, who can be themselves with no restrictions and who laughs every day, and I can safely say that this is all due to my sisters.

As I finish up my last year at Baylor, I know I will take away the strong bonds and experiences I have gathered from this organization and be grateful I had the chance to live them.

About Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc.

Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc. was founded on Oct. 1, 1999 at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Before becoming a Greek organization, Delta Kappa Delta was known as B.E.T.I.S., Behind Every True Indian Sister.

This organization is fully devoted to service, their National Founding Mothers realized the need to unite, serve and educate the campus and community.

And through B.E.T.I.S. the N.F.M.’s were able to spread and strengthen their ideas to other South Asian women. They also realized and emphasized the importance of excellence in education, citizenship, culture and sisterhood.

Delta Kappa Delta Sorority, Inc. has grown tremendously over the last 15 years. There are now chapters and colonies throughout the entire nation.

Each and every sister of this sorority is dedicated to service and the philanthropy, Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention. The sisters all exemplify the concept of “Sisterhood Built through Service.”

In time, we hope that our work will benefit our communities and provide a lasting and prosperous future for our organization.
