Jovan Heer is a Canadian-born music journalist, artist manager, and DJ. He grew up in Kamloops, British Columbia, before eventually moving to Edmonton, Alberta. DJ Heer has been involved in journalism for just under two years for the largest Punjabi music website in the world, SimplyBhangra.com, and works as a DJ for Pure Entertainment Canada.

“I’ve had a passion for music ever since I was walking around in diapers, where I would dance all around the house and quietly mutter parts of my favorite songs in front of all my family and friends. My passion for music is at an all time high as I am now a daily contributor as a journalist for the largest Punjabi music website in the world, SimplyBhangra.com, which is based out of the UK and has expanded worldwide.

I have been a part of a great team at Simply Bhangra for almost two years and I can say that it is one of the largest achievements of my life. I have the pleasure of interacting with various singers, producers, actors and many other influential people on a daily basis. I grew up idolizing the likes of Jazzy B and Malkit Singh in the Punjabi music industry and the great Michael Jackson who was one of the best singers and dancers of his time.

I have had the opportunity to interview the likes of Jazzy B, Malkit Singh and many more Punjabi artists. This is already a dream come true but it’s great to have their perspective on the music industry and relay that information to their fans and the public.

Along with interviewing artists, I also have written articles on my thoughts on the state of the music industry and have gotten much praise from not only readers but people that are involved in the industry as well. It’s a great way to communicate to people who wouldn’t otherwise be exposed to critical perspectives. I am currently also managing a few Punjabi artists, planning their tours alongside handling their day to day activities and social media accounts.

I’ve been blessed with a great family and friends who have been supportive towards everything I’ve done my entire life. My parents would always take me to Punjabi concerts to help me learn more about the culture. Seeing and hearing artists on stage would make my eyes light up— music is always been something I wanted to do. While my dreams of being a singer didn’t come true, I have continued to be passionate about music and have now got myself a career in DJ’ing with Pure Entertainment Canada.

Music is a tough industry to get into because there is unlimited competition in the world. The hard work and quality you put into your pursuits and having the right team will make you successful. Speaking with many artists throughout the past few years has inspired me so much; I see the hard work that they have put into their careers and how influential they have been in people’s lives that I, too, want to help make a difference.

To some people, being on stage and playing music for people seems like an easy thing but it takes a lot of experience to read crowds and make sure you are giving them the best party experience that you can give them. These are usually nights that they’d like to remember for the rest of their lives.

I have been working hard on many different projects as I feel it’s important to work as much as you can while you’re young and you have the energy to do so. No matter what challenges you face, you can always push through them and try to reach your goals and your achievements. You will always have negative people in your life that will put you down or tell you that you won’t be able to accomplish something but it’s best to ignore them and strive for what you want to do in your life.

You can never have enough knowledge on any subject—there is always an opportunity to grow and learn more on any matter. Music is no different and there is unlimited growth in the field.”
